Boy Scout Troop 1, Acton, is a great organization. With over three dozen Scouts ranging in ages from 11 to 17, Troop 1 follows the Scouting tradition of being a boy-led Troop. The activities (most of which are outdoor-oriented) are based on the principle of "build an adventure", and the program is strongly geared towards giving them an opportunity to stretch themselves physically and mentally, helps them overcome self-imposed limitations (e.g., conquering fears), and learn to be organizers and leaders (e.g., the boys take on age-appropriate responsibilities for conducting the business of the Troop). Among the many things we do are hiking, camping, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and community service projects.

(A full resolution camp picture can be found here.)

The environment is one of encouraging growth and exploration. The older Scouts take care of the younger ones, acting as guides and mentors. For example, they "show them the ropes" (both literally and figuratively) of how to succeed at outdoor and skill-oriented activities. Leadership skill development is another important part of our program. Scouts volunteer for, or are elected to, positions of responsibility within the Troop and are responsible for the duties of the leadership positions they hold -- accountable to their fellow scouts, not to the adult leaders (who are there to provide support, not to direct).

Troop 1 is one of the oldest Troops around, having been chartered in 1916. It is also the Isaac Davis Troop, commemorating Capt. Isaac Davis, leader of the Acton Minutemen that charged the British on the Old North Bridge in Concord on April 19, 1775, turning the tide of war in our favor.
