Essential Gear for New Troop 1 Scouts (and their adventurous parents)
- Boots
- Ankle support
- Waterproof
- Socks
- Synthetics (e.g., Smart Wool)
- Nylon sock liners
- At least two pair
- Sleeping bag
- Fiber fill works when wet
- Sleeping pad
- Closed-cell foam or foam-filled inflatable
- Backpack
- External frame most adjustable for growing bodies
- Internal frame more comfortable and stable
- Headlamp and batteries
- Headlamp permits hands-free use
- LED source that use AAA batteries
- Pack extra batteries in plastic
- Bowl, cup, spoon, etc
- Lexan or plastic is best (metal gets hot on lap)
- Rain gear
- Avoid ponchos (inefficient hard to work when wearing)
- Rain Jacket AND pants
- Pant legs with bottom zipper (so they go on over boots)
- Vents to reduce moisture build-up
- Non-cotton clothing
- Synthetic or wool
- Zip-off pants
- Dress in layers
- Long underwear
- Water containers
- Two one-liter "Nalgene-like" most versatile
- Bladder-type only really required for long-range, desert treks

This is an extended, general, all-purpose packing list for campouts, backpacking trips, and other overnights.
This list is intended to supplement (not supplant) equipment lists attached to each trip's permission slip. It should only be used as a guide to the kind of things you might want to bring on a trip, and as a guide for planning future equipment purchase.
